Smaller changes: what to do when a full remodel is not the answer
Before a project, there is a shorter list of changes that cost a fraction as much, take a day, and are skipped more often than anything else on this site. If the budget is limited or the decision is not ready, start here.
Grab bars, properly anchored
The single most useful change in most bathrooms, and the one most often done badly. A bar is only as good as what it is fixed to: it needs to be anchored into studs or into blocking added behind the wall, not into tile and a plastic plug.
Position matters as much as fixing. Bars belong where a hand reaches for support, entering the shower, standing from a seat, turning, rather than where they are symmetrical. Watching how somebody actually moves through the room is the design method, and it takes ten minutes.
Towel rails and shower doors are not grab bars, and suction-fixed bars are a temporary aid rather than a fixture. Both distinctions matter.
Somewhere to sit
A stable seat in the shower changes what is possible without changing the room. A folding wall seat is tidier and needs proper fixing; a good freestanding chair costs less and can be tried immediately.
Height is the detail that decides comfort. A seat too low is hard to stand from; a seat too high is uncomfortable to wash from. Try before fixing anything to a wall.
Light, and surfaces
- Bathrooms are usually under-lit, and improving lighting is inexpensive. Even, glare-free light around the mirror and over the wet area is the goal, not brightness for its own sake.
- A night light on the route between bedroom and bathroom is trivial to add and frequently appreciated.
- Non-slip surfaces: a properly specified mat, an anti-slip treatment, or replacing a very smooth floor tile in the wet area.
- Contrast helps: a toilet seat, a bar or a threshold that is visibly different from the surface behind it is easier to locate.
Controls and taps
- Lever taps instead of knobs, easier for hands that grip less well.
- A thermostatic mixing valve, so temperature cannot swing when water is used elsewhere in the house.
- A hand shower on a slide bar, which makes seated washing possible without any building work.
- Shower controls reachable from outside the spray, so the water can be started before stepping in.
None of this is a project. Most of it is a plumber for half a day, and together it changes a room considerably.
The doorway, and the thing to check first
If a walker or wheelchair may ever be used, measure the doorway before anything else. A narrow door limits every other decision in the room, and widening it is a real job, occasionally as significant as the bathroom work itself.
There is a cheap intermediate step worth knowing about: offset hinges, which swing the door clear of the opening and recover a useful amount of width for very little money.

Can we install grab bars ourselves?
Only if they can be fixed into studs or proper blocking. A bar that pulls out of the wall is worse than no bar, so where the fixing is uncertain it is worth a professional.
